Paulette Goddard (born Pauline Marion Levy) (June 3, 1910 - April 23, 1990) was an American actress. A former child model and Ziegfield Girl, she was a major star of the Paramount Studio in the 1940s. Her exceptional beauty and fame led to several marriages to notable men, including Charlie Chaplin, Burgess Meredith, and Erich Maria Remarque.
Goddard was born an only child in Whitestone Landing, New York in Queens County to a Jewish father and a Christian mother. She became a fashion model as a teenager, and debuted with the Ziegfeld Follies at the age of 13 as a Ziegfeld Girl. She married Broadway writer Edgar James at 16 in 1926 or 1927, but divorced him four years later.
In 1929 she went to Hollywood, where she appeared in several films over the next few years (in bit parts). In 1932, she met Charlie Chaplin, and they became a couple shortly afterwards, although she was a little old for his standards. They married in 1936 and divorced in 1942. He cast her in Modern Times, but it wasn't until they separated. Goddard became a star with a strong supporting role in The Women, in which Rosalind Russell beats her up for fooling around with her husband (although Goddard had been considered for the role of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind while filming the movie).
